Five Years old & Fifty Years old.

When I was five, I played in sand with dump trucks.

At fifty, I'm playing in sand with dump trucks.

The difference is...

I spend more time playing with dump trucks now than when I was five.

This top shot is the job site a few days ago.

The bottom shot is an artist's rendition of what we hope it may look like.

This is where my is mind is at least 45 hours a week.

When I was five had less time for construction.

You forgot one important difference - they now PAY you to play in the sandbox.

I don't think the rest of my blog name showed up in the first posting.

I am "The Person who has known you for most of your life"!

Anyway, may you continue to enjoy your trucks and construction and play... the building will be lovely. The City of C. is yours.... so much architecture you've influenced...

Now I am off kayaking in the City that is yours on the grand little river system that runs through it.

Thanks for sharing that picture and artist rendition, Bob, and your interesting comparison with playing in the sandbox as a kid and your job now.

Got me thinking about my job. When I was a kid, I was pretty much of a loner, an outsider-personality-type, never fitting in anywhere, only a few friends (I had to change schools a lot because parents moved so I was always the new kid on the block. Sometimes I was lonely, longed for interaction with lots of kid, wanted to be important in the sense of having other people need me, but didn't feel that.

Now I am a volunteer coordinator, interacting with an amazing variety of people every week from the recently bereaved to refugees who have fled religious persecution in places like Iran to a born-again-Christian-middle-aged-singer-songwriter who sang to me in the office. They all want me to help them find meaning in their life through volunteering.

The job is emotionally challenging, sometimes draining, but often hugely rewarding. I have really found my niche. Not a sandbox, but metaphorically, the same.

PS I have watched the demolition of the Forsyth building outside my office window for 2 months... it is finally just rubble today. Interesting to see the tearing down part. Now, what will the City build? We need YOU over here, Bob, with your vision.
